Your doctor uses sutures to close skin or tissue wounds. A needle is attached to a “thread” that your doctor uses to close the wound.

Suturing is possible with many materials. Your doctor will decide which material is best for the procedure.

Various kinds of sutures—

There are different ways in which sutures can be categorized.

First, the materials in which sutures are found can be classified into absorbable and non-absorbable types.

Absorbable sutures don’t need to be removed by your doctor. The reason is that the enzymes found within your tissues can digest them naturally.

However, it’s important to remove non-absorbable sutures. They are either removed later or, at times, left indefinitely.

Secondly, suture materials are categorized based on the material’s actual structure. Monofilament sutures only have one thread. The use of a single thread allows for easier suturing of wounds. Braided sutures are made of multiple small threads, which are braided to gain thickness. This may provide greater security to the wound but can also increase the possibility of infection.

A third distinction is that sutures can either be made of synthetic or natural materials. However, because suture materials can usually be sterilized, it is not necessary to make this distinction.

How are sutures and stitches different?

You will often see the terms stitches and sutures used interchangeably. It is important to understand that “suture”, the actual medical device used by doctors to heal a wound, is not the same thing as a stitch. Stitching is the technique with the help of which a doctor uses sutures to seal wounds.

How your doctor chooses the right suture?

To grade suture materials, their diameter and type are used. The material diameter is indicated by a number followed by an “O”. The smaller the number, the bigger the diameter of the suture strands.

A needle can also have many different features. It can be different sizes and may have a cutting- or non-cutting tip. You can close more tissue with every stitch using larger needles, but smaller needles will result in less scarring.

Like the many types of sutures available, there are numerous ways to use them. Here are some of the techniques—

  • The first is called a continuous suture. This technique uses one strand of the material for stitching. This variety of sutures is quick and easy to use, as the tension is evenly distributed across the entire stitched strand.
  • The second type is known as an interrupted suture. It closes the wound using multiple strands. After making each stitch, the material must be cut and tied. This makes stitching secure. Even if one stitch opens because of some reason, the remaining stitches will keep the wound closed.
  • The third type is referred to as a deep suture. It goes down to the tissue layers (deeper than the skin) and is placed underneath. They can be interrupted or continuous.
  • The next on the list is a buried suture. This type of suturing is done in such a way that the stitch knots remain hidden under the closed wound area. A buried suture is usually not removed. They help when major suturing needs to be done deeper in the body.
  • Purse-string suture is a kind of continuous suturing done around an area of the body and tied like a drawstring.
  • There are certain sutures that are applied in the dermis. They are called subcutaneous sutures. The dermis is the tissue layer just beneath the outer layer of your skin. You will place the short stitches parallel to the wound. And then, the stitches will be attached at either end of the cut.
